William Farrell is a
former coach of the NYAC wrestling team, coach of the 1972 US Olympic freestyle
wrestling team, former NYAC president and a 1989 Hall of Fame inductee.
Farrell coached the NYAC wrestling
team from 1960 through 1972. Under his guidance, the Club team won 11 AAU
titles. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Farrell coached the US men’s
freestyle wrestling team. At those Games, American freestyle wrestlers won six
medals, three of which were gold.
In 1982, Farrell was elected
president of the NYAC.
Farrell passed away on
June 9th, 2012. In honor of his lifelong commitment and
contributions to the sport of wrestling, the Bill Farrell International
Wrestling Tournament was created after his passing.
